Arsenal are on the verge of completing the signing of Ben White after reaching an agreement in principle with Brighton for a fee of £50 million.
Despite having a plethora of central defensive options, the Gunners are set to make the 23-year-old their main summer signing, with Mikel Arteta eager to make the England international the foundation of a new-look defense.
After the formalities of his transfer are completed, White will compete for a starting spot in Arteta’s strongest XI against the likes of Rob Holding, Calum Chambers, Pablo Mari, and Gabriel Magalhaes.
However, according to The Times, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that a centre-half pairing of White and Gabriel is the best option when everyone is fit.
Gabriel had a fantastic start to his Arsenal career, winning the club’s Player of the Month award three times in a row, but his form plummeted midway through a difficult season for both him and the club.
The 23-year-old was set to miss pre-season training after being selected to represent Brazil in the upcoming Olympics, but a minor injury has put a stop to that, and he will step up his rehabilitation at the club’s training ground when it reopens next week following a minor Covid breakout.
